John Jasper, Slave Preacher. Whites in Richmond, Virginia, loved this slave preacher even when he preached funerals where he refused to eulogize sinners and send them to heaven. The Rev. John Jasper was a famous Black preacher who had such power over the fear of death that his reputation for great preaching began when he was converted at age 25, while still a slave. When Emancipation came, he was 50 years old, and from then until his death at 89 he was the most popular preacher in Richmond. He was best known for a message called “De Sun Do Move.” --Bishop Wellington Boone
